Ring 50 is proud to host the Capital Conjurors, a special program for youth ages 8 to 15. The program was created to encourage and teach youth about the field of magic.
The Capital Conjurors meet at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the same location as Ring 50, The Lyceum at 201 S. Washington St., Alexandria, Va. Each month, we learn a new magic trick and tips on how to perform magic. Each Conjuror will receive a new magic trick at each meeting. The program is under the supervision of Ring 50 Youth Activities Director Drew Owen, a professional magician who performs under the name Professor Fizzwiffle.
Conjurors are also invited to attend the Ring 50 general membership meeting that same evening starting at 7:30 p.m.
The program follows an annual curriculum, beginning each September. Each Conjuror will receive a magic book that will serve as the textbook for the course. They will also receive an official membership card, a binder for keeping instructions, and a box for carrying their magic props. Any props needed for the lessons will be provided each meeting, so at the end of the year, they will have a full magic kit. All this is just $20 per year!
During each class, the young magicians will learn to perform at least one trick from the textbook, as well as some fun magic not in the book. They will get professional, hands-on help with each step including tips on stage presence, scripting, and misdirection. They will also learn about the history of magic and may watch video performances by great magicians from the past. The Conjurors will be encouraged to perform one trick each meeting. At the end of the year, the class will present a full magic show to display the skills they have learned.
Q: What if a Conjuror can’t make it to all of the meetings?
A: Even if they miss a meeting, they will still be able to follow along in the book and will still
receive the instructions and props at the following meeting.
Q: What if we want to try it out before joining?
A: Feel free to attend up to two meetings per year as a non-member.
Q: Can I invite a friend to attend?
A: Yes! In fact, we encourage it. A member who brings a friend will receive a bonus trick.
